Administering Medication

The main consideration in medicating your pet are that a veterinarian has determined the proper medication and the correct dosage for your pet. Your pet may appear to be the perfect patient, but animals are smart and can be sneaky. Forty percent of the time he/she will hold a pill in the cheek for twenty minutes or so and when you are not watching quickly spit the medication out and knock it under the refrigerator. If medication is hidden in the food, he may not finish the whole meal thus not receiving the full dosage. Most dogs will readily swallow a pill in a piece of cheese or meat. Liquid medication for very fussy animals can be administered by pouring the medication into the pocket between the animals cheek and teeth, then hold your pet's mouth closed for a moment. Notice your pet actually swallowing the liquid to ensure he is not holding it in for a quick disposal later.
