Assessing An Injured Pet
The color of the gums are very important. If the color is white or pale your pet is probably suffering from shock or blood loss. Take the animal to the veterinarian immediately! If the gums are pink it is a good sign, possibly no major blood loss externally or internally. Carefully run your hands over the animals body feeling for swelling, pain or wounds. Check the movement of the limbs, note any pain, grating sensation, or floppy limbs. These are indications that the pelvis, limb, or spine may be broken, fractured, or dislocated. In such cases or if the animal is unconscious, take the animal to the veterinarian immediately! If everything seems normal, prop the animal up on all four legs and encourage it to walk. If the animal falls down, staggers, cries as in pain, has uncontrollable panting, or labored breathing, wrap your pet in a blanket and rush to the veterinarian!
